SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -- The deadly shooting in Newtown, Connecticut is a tragedy that has touched the nation.
"They had their entire lives ahead of them -- birthdays, graduations, weddings," President Barack Obama said as he shed a tear.
As the country mourns, there is a new debate on how to prevent massacres like this from happening again.
"We're going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this regardless of the politics," Obama said.
"The only way we're going to prevent that is with like force. Sitting around a campfire singing 'Kumbaya' is not going to do it," Bill Kucyk told Fox 2 this week.
It's a complex problem with no easy solutions, and some believe it's more of a mental health issue than just a gun issue.
"I don't think it's the guns. It's the person," said Sherry Chandler. Joining Huel Perkins and Charlie Langton on our panels:
Rick Ector, the owner of Rick's Firearm Academy in Detroit, a man who believes in self-defense and who says the solution to gun violence is more guns, but in the hands of the right people.
Brenda Lawrence, the mayor of Southfield, who says the massacre in Newtown is deadly proof that the nation's current gun laws are too weak.
Neil Rockind, an attorney, who has handled thousands of criminal cases from domestic abuse to murder.
Bill Kucyk, a retired police officer and owner of Action Impact, one of the biggest gun shops in metro Detroit. He has trained thousands of people to use a gun, and he's against any law that would impede our rights to protect ourselves.
Virg Bernero, the mayor of Lansing who has to deal with gun violence in his own city and a man who also knows what it's like to have a family member suffering from mental illness.
Dr. Gerald Shiener, a psychiatrist dedicated to helping his individual patients and also parents cope with catastrophe.
Plus, Charlie Langton takes "Let It Rip" on the road and asks people whether we need armed guards in schools.
