Woman attacked for iPhone at PATH station

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

An amateur boxer is under arrest in a violent robbery of a Jersey City woman at a Manhattan PATH station.

Port Authority Police say 41-year-old James Drexie of New York City was arrested Wednesday on a charge of third-degree attempted robbery.

The victim was reportedly put into a choke-hold and then punched by a man who tried to steal her iPhone at the 9th Street PATH station.

Surveillance cameras captured the assault.  In the video, the attacker is seen following the woman, peeking around the corner and waiting for the moment she takes out her phone to pounce.

The woman refused to give up her phone and the man ran off.  Commuters who saw the frightened woman on the ground came over to help.

The woman was not seriously injured.

Port Authority Police Chief John Ryan says news broadcasts of the surveillance camera video led to the identification of the suspect, who has a history of arrests.

Drexie was to appear Thursday in court in Manhattan. Police said they don't know if has retained a lawyer.
