New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has ordered flags on state government buildings to be flown at half-staff on Friday, December 21, 2012, in honor of a soldier from Long Island who died in Afghanistan.

Sgt. 1st Class Kevin E. Lipari, 39, of Baldwin, died December 14 in Logar Province, the Department of Defense said.

"On behalf of all New Yorkers, I send my deepest sympathy to the friends, family, and fellow soldiers of Sgt. 1st Class Lipari," Cuomo said. "We regret his death but we will remember and honor his service to our nation and his dedication to duty."

The military did not release details of Lipari's death, which is under investigation.

Lipari was assigned to the HHC 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, based in Bamberg, Germany.
