Ariz. to allow delays in opening pot dispensaries

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona officials will allow newly licensed medical marijuana dispensaries to delay opening their doors to customers for weeks or even months in order to acquire pot to sell.

Health Services director Will Humble says dispensaries can acquire marijuana from other dispensaries and authorized caregivers, but many plan to grow their own.

Operators aren't allowed to grow marijuana before being licensed but are also supposed to have inventory on hand when they open.

Once dispensaries open, the state requires them to be open at least 30 hours a week and be capable of serving patients.

Meanwhile, a Maricopa County Superior Court judge refused Thursday to temporarily put on hold his recent ruling that federal drug laws don't stand in the way of implementing Arizona's medical marijuana law.
