ELOY, Ariz. -
A U.S. service member was killed in a skydiving accident Thursday morning.
Investigators say the jump took place at 10:22 a.m. during a training exercise.
The body was found in a field, south of Eloy Airport, near Shedd and 11-mile Corner Road.
"We got a call of a skydiving accident at Skydive Arizona, it did result in a fatality of the skydiver, a member of the U.S. military. We are not releasing the name of the individual until we can notify the next of kin," said Sgt. Brian Jerome of Eloy Police.
The service member was stationed at Fort Bragg in the North Carolina, according to officials there.
There's no word yet if the parachutist was a man or a woman.
Police acknowledge that skydiving comes with risks.
"It happens, I cannot tell you the numbers off the top of my head, it is not common but it is not uncommon. It is just an unfortunate part of skydiving, it does occur out there," said Sgt. Jerome.
Eloy is home to one of the largest skydiving facilities in the country.
