Court firm on March trial on Arizona redistricting

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - A panel of 3 federal judges is refusing to delay a scheduled late March trial on a lawsuit challenging Arizona's new map of legislative districts.

The case filed on behalf of 11 Republican voters contends that population variances between some districts dilute votes in violation of constitutional protections for equal protection under the law.

The state's redistricting commission had said critical pretrial legal issues remain unresolved and that it'd be too much of a rush to go to trial on March 25.

But a new order signed by 1 of the judges says some issues will best be decided during the trial as the court hears relevant testimony.

The panel previously said the case needs to go to trial as soon as possible to avoid disrupting the 2014 elections.
