CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
One more thing, about the run on Hostess products. Ever since it was announced that the Twinkie company shut down, people have been stockpiling snacks that, in most cases, they haven't eaten in decades.
Today, the final shipment of Hostess baked goods was delivered to Chicago area Jewel stores. Store locations and delivery times were posted on Facebook so people could try to claim their share of the last motherload of trans fat from Hostess, even though they'll surely make more when a new company takes over.
All this Twinkie-mania reminds me of what happens when a restaurant nobody goes to anymore announces it's closing. All of a suddenly you can't get a reservation.
I was thinking about that the other day when I went into central camera on South Wabash. It's one of the last of the great old camera shops. The place is like a museum and still selling and repairing cameras like they have been in the loop since 1899. The same family still owns them.
We need to support great old Chicago area businesses like that--the Tivoli Theatre, Southport Lanes, Schaller's Pump, Margie's Candies, and others--before they announce they're closing and it's too late. You don't know what you've got, until you lose it.
That's the whole philosophy behind McDonalds not putting the McRib on the menu permanently. It works. I had one today.

Over the weekend, the Tom Cruise sci-fi thriller "Oblivion" was number one at the box office. But the movie I'm talking about wasn't even in the top ten.
