Gold Coast man sentenced to 10 years for terrorism plot

A Gold Coast resident was sentenced to nearly 10 years in federal prison Tuesday for attempting to join an East African terrorist group in 2010.
U.S. District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman sentenced Shaker Masri to 118 months, according to the U.S. Attorney's office, and must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence. He will then be on supervised release for 20 years after his release.
Masri, 29, pleaded guilty in July to attempting to provide material support to al-Shabaab, a group he knew was engaging in foreign terrorism, federal prosecutors said.
The plea agreement states that on July 19, 2010, Masri told an associate working with the U.S. government that he decided to travel to engage as a combatant in a jihadist conflict in Somalia. He asked for money from the associate, who agreed if allowed to travel with him.
The two met multiple times to discuss the trip, and Masri told the associate they would travel to California, cross the border to Mexico, then fly from a Latin American country to Somalia, where they would join al-Shabaab, the plea agreement states.
On Aug. 3, 2010, the two collected an $18,000 debt from a liquor store and went to buy a new laptop, prosecutors said in a release. Masri was arrested as they exited the store.
"Shaker Masri wanted to take the lives of human beings -- including his own -- to wreak havoc and advance a terrorist agenda," acting U.S. Atty. Gary Shapiro said in a statement.
Marsi has been in custody since his arrest in August 2010.
