A Mesa mother accused of abandoning her daughter at a park was sentenced Tuesday morning.

Prosecutors say 43-year-old Laurie Lee Kelly left her 6-year-old in the care of homeless people because she was going to have sex with different men.

Kelly said she knew she was putting her daughter in danger, but couldn't help herself, according to police.

This happened in late August and the little girl stood in the heat with no water for more than two hours.  A witness noticed the little girl all alone and called police.

According to court paperwork, Kelly confessed to leaving the girl in the park, then going to "make money" by selling herself for sex.  She bought the homeless people beer in exchange for babysitting services.

The Mesa Public Schools teacher's assistant was expected to make a plea deal, but decided to change her plea to guilty to one count of child abuse.  She was sentenced to 30 days in jail and 4 years supervised probation with domestic violence terms.
