PHOENIX -

A man was killed Saturday morning near the mini stack after he drove off an overpass and hit another car.

After the car landed on State Route 51 near McDowell Road, the freeway was closed.

Two vehicles were involved in the deadly crash.  Authorities say after the car landing on another vehicle, it burst into flames.

Off-duty deputy Doug Matteson pulled over to help when he saw the crash scene and the fire.

A woman claimed there was a person in the burning car.  Matteson tried to free that person, but it was too late.

"I actually told the other person that was around there with me to get out of the way I think the veicle is going to blow up and when we got about 10 seconds away and I got far enough the vehicle exploded," he said.

Firefighters were able to put out the flames and police did find one body in the burned car.  The people in the second vehicle only had minor injuries and are expected to be okay.

The deceased person's name was not released and a reason why he drove off the overpass is not known.
