Making Japan's nuclear industry safer

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

The people of Japan were jolted by an early morning earthquake Friday.  The 7.3 quake struck the northeastern coast -- the same area devastated by last year's massive earthquake and tsunami.

This time around, the tsunami was much smaller and didn't cause any damage.  That's good news for the folks who live and work near the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

Last year's massive quake killed nearly 20,000 people, crippled the plant and caused all three reactors go melt down.

It was the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years.

One of the leading experts in nuclear power, Randy Eddington, is in charge of the Palo Verde nuclear plant west of the valley and he's on his way to Japan to tour the Fukushima plant.

Video: FOX 10's John Hook talks to Randy Eddington about making Japan's nuclear industry safer.
