CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Firefighters battled an extra-alarm fire in the North Lawndale neighborhood Friday evening on the West Side.

The fire started about 5 p.m. in a vacant commercial building near 16th Street and Drake Avenue and was elevated to a two-alarm blaze, according to Fire Media Affairs.

Firefighters reported "heavy" fire on the second floor of the two-story building and flames were coming through the roof, the fire department said. Firefighters used a defensive approach to extinguish the blaze.

The fire was extinguished about 6:24 p.m., the fire department said, and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Friday night.
