CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A 3-year-old boy was unharmed when the van that he was sleeping in was stolen while his mom knocked on a friend's door late Thursday.

The van was found by police a short time later a couple blocks away.

About 10 p.m., the woman left the van running, double-parked, in the 7800 block of South Essex Avenue, as she went to knock on a friend's door, police said. The woman's 3-year-old boy was asleep in a car seat at the time.

As she was at the friend's door, a male jumped into the van and drove off, according to police.

Witnesses called 911 and police found the van a short time later a couple blocks away, in the 7800 block of South Yates Boulevard. The boy was still asleep in the van and he was unharmed. The man who took the van was not in custody.
