Arizona to break ground for World War II memorial

Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - Secretary of State Ken Bennett and other Arizona officials are breaking ground Friday for construction of a World War II memorial to be located in Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza in Phoenix.

The memorial will feature historic gun barrels from two U.S. battleships, the USS Arizona and the USS Missouri. Names of Arizona military personnel who died during the war will be displayed on a steel structure between the gun barrels.

The Arizona was sunk during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor at the beginning of America's involvement in the war. The Missouri was the site of the Japanese surrender ceremony that ended the war.

The noon groundbreaking will take place immediately after a Pearl Harbor Day remembrance ceremony at the plaza.
