PHILADELPHIA -

Police say an eight-year-old girl is in stable condition after she was accidentally shot by her seven-year-old brother Thursday.

The incident occurred as the children were playing with a gun in a home on the 1900 block of Georgian Road in the Philadelphia's West Oak Lane neighborhood, police said.

FOX 29's Claudia Gomez reports the children were playing upstairs while the adults of the home were downstairs. When the grandparents heard the gun shot, they raced upstairs only to find the boy's sister with a wound to her right arm.

According to investigators, the boy, found the gun in a locked box and managed to find the key to open it.

The girl was struck in the bicep and was reported to be in stable condition at Albert Einstein Medical Center, according to police.

The children and two other siblings live with their grandparents, who police say have custody.

Neighbors describe the 62-year-old grandfather, who owns the gun, as someone who is protective of his grand kids.

Police questioned the boy and his grandfather. Investigators say the grandfather did just about everything correctly.

Police say they don't expect to file any charges. Investigators say instead of a lockbox that requires a key, the man could have used an electronic lockbox.
