State offers grants to improve shooting ranges

Updated:

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - The state is offering grants to help develop and improve public shooting and archery ranges across Arizona.

The deadline for applications to the Arizona Game and Fish Department is Jan. 15.

The department is encouraging government agencies that operate the ranges, shooting clubs and sporting groups to apply. Private for-profit ranges aren't eligible for the funding.

Anthony Chavez of Game and Fish says the funding has helped expand safety barriers, add clay target and archery shooting, and modernize the ranges. Other potential projects include building structures to reduce noise, and improving access roads and parking lots.

About $100,000 in grant funding generally is available. The maximum award per project is $50,000.
