NY county set to ban register receipts with BPA

Posted: Updated:

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (AP) — A New York county has outlawed the use of register receipts containing the chemical BPA.

Newsday reports that the Suffolk County Legislature approved the ban Tuesday.

BPA is found in hundreds of plastic items. It also is found in thermal paper used at ATMs, gas stations and other retailers.

Some researchers say ingesting the chemical can interfere with development of the reproductive and nervous systems in babies and young children.

The federal government is currently spending $30 million on a study assessing the health effects on humans.

In 2009, Suffolk became the first county to ban BPA in baby bottles and children's sippy cups.

The FDA said last summer that BPA is no longer found in baby bottles and the cups.
