Flu season comes early to Arizona

PHOENIX -

The Centers for Disease Control is warning that this could be one of the worst flu seasons we've seen in a while. If you haven't gotten a shot, you may want to get it as soon as you can.

This year, the flu season got a head start, with Arizona's first case showing up in October.

"Last year we didn't see our first case until December so now we're seeing cases earlier in the flu season. We can expect you know, normally we'd say we'll probably see a lot more numbers for longer," says Dr. Cara Christ, M.D. AZDHS.

Dr. Cara Christ says that shoppers without a flu shot are at a high risk with the holiday season in full swing.

"If you're going to go to the mall you're going to be touching railings, you're going to be using restrooms, you're going to be touching high contact surface areas. That's how you're going to catch influenza."

If you're thinking about getting a flu shot, Dr. Christ says the sooner the better, because you want it to kick in before all those holiday gatherings.

"It usually takes about two weeks to start getting that immunity, but anytime you can get it is better because it's just going to kick in sooner."

If you're already feeling sick, don't confuse the flu for a common cold. The symptoms are different.

"People are going to feel like they're very tired, they may have muscle aches they may have pain. you'll feel like you got hit by a bus when you have the flu."

Dr. Christ says that the best way to fight the flu is to simply sleep it off for a few days.
