CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
One more thing, about Mayor Emanuel's plan to allow 34 new digital billboards along the expressways.
Aldermen are debating the merits of the contract with the billboard company and exactly where the electronic billboards should go. The full council votes on it next week. I'm casting my vote tonight. No. Because things are about to get ugly.
Just look at what has happened to the stretch of Ohio Street coming off the Kennedy. In the last few years the proliferation of these new flashing signs have turned the street into a mini Las Vegas.
Same thing on Ontario Street heading onto the Kennedy--what was once a charming mix of small buildings and businesses
Is now a blur of flash and trash. And these are small signs. Some of the new expressway billboards will be a hundred feet tall.
Just what we need--- something else to distract drivers. I know the city is going to get some much needed revenue, but most of those signs will be close to downtown---an architecturally stunning downtown. I hope they don't wreck the view.
