CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
An off-duty Cook County corrections officer was shot early Tuesday in the South Side Roseland neighborhood in what police believe may have been an attempted carjacking.
About 2:04 a.m. Tuesday, the 34-year-old man was shot multiple times at East 95th Street and State Street, police said.
The seven-year veterans and father of two sons, ages 11 and 15, is resting at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County after undergoing surgery on his jaw Tuesday morning, Cook County Sheriff's office spokesman Frank Bilecki said late Tuesday morning.
The off-duty corrections officer was driving a Jaguar north on I-57 when he believed he was being followed and exited at 99th and Halsted, Bilecki said.
The officer saw a green minivan exit the expressway and follow him to 98th and Halsted, pull alongside him and open fire, Bilecki said.
The officer was able to drive away and called family members and police, who met him at 95th and State, authorities said.
The officer was shot six times-- once in the jaw, once in the back and four times in the shoulder area, Bilecki said. He was conscious and speaking with paramedics when they arrived. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in "stable" condition, police said.
The shooting may have been an attempted carjacking, Bilecki said. It is not clear if the officer had his service weapon with him at the time, but his car did not have a police radio.
The officer has worked for seven years in the minimum to medium security section of the Cook County Jail, transporting detainees to court and other county programs, Bilecki said.
