Science Center to open with new name, exhibits

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

After being closed for more than a year because of a financial crisis, the Detroit Science Center is preparing to reopen with a new name and some new exhibits.

The facility that gives children a hands on look at everything from technology to math will now be called the Michigan Science Center.

The Detroit Science Center was shuttered in September 2011 after the board decided it could not overcome a $10 million deficit. Director of Visitor Experience Todd Slisher said the old Detroit Science Center was foreclosed upon and its assets, including the building and the land, was purchased by Ron Weiser who then sold the Science Center to a newly formed Michigan Science Center.

Slisher says the goal of the new facility is the same as it has always been to inspire young people through science, engineering or technology. Slisher says the new Michigan Science Center has put into place a tightly controlled government business model to keep track of the facilities finances.

The center is expected to open for a sneak peek on December 20, with regular operations beginning December 26.
