Chain gang serves as a reminder to not drink and drive

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has a visual reminder for people not to drink and drive during the holidays or any day.
While wearing pink DUI inmate uniforms performing community service tasks, Arpaio will have the female chain gangs out in high traffic areas to maximize his message to holiday revelers.
On Tuesday morning, they were seen picking up trash near 40th Street and McDowell.
"To emphasize you should not drink and drive, every one of the inmates are in jail for drunk driving," said Sheriff Arpaio. "I want to send a message to everyone driving by to send a message you're going to Tent City and be on a chain gang."
Arpaio started with male chain gangs in 1994 and created the nation's first female chain gang two years later.
The chain gangs volunteer to work for 30 days to get out of lock down and back into Tent City. Not only do they pick up trash, but bury the dead and paint over graffiti.
