SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (MyFoxDetroit) -
Leaving the car running – it's something most of us are guilty of, especially while trying to warm up during these cold temperatures.
But this seemingly beneficial habit is deceiving you. Your gas is wasted and the extra fumes pollute the air.
Raj Raina, a local high school student, learned that the hard way after his relative in India got asthma. Doctors said that asthma was because of the abundance of car fumes and exhaust.
So Raina started watching our driving patterns here in Michigan. And he was only in middle school when he started his "anti-idle" campaign and has since received many awards for being a green leader.
He has encouraged parents to sign a pledge against letting their cars idle. And now Novi Middle School is an idle-free zone.
But Novi Police have caught on, too. GPS monitoring systems are in each police car, keeping track of how long it idles. That policy has been in effect now for three years, reducing the department's idling by about 60%.
