MESA, Ariz. -

A teen accused of shooting and killing his girlfriend's mother in August 2011 was sentenced to 22 years in prison on Friday.

Braden Rockriver told police he took his father's gun from a closet and went to his girlfriend's Mesa home, planning to kill his girlfriend and then commit suicide.

When he heard the garage door open, police say he tried to force his way past his girlfriend's mom, 42-year-old Denna Strebe, but a struggle ensued and the weapon fired.

A bullet hit Strebe in the head and killed her.

The teen then went to his girlfriend's room only to be met by her brother.

A confrontation between them and the girl's father ensued before Rockriver ran off. He was arrested shortly after.

Rockriver will serve 22 years in prison for second degree murder and 1 and a half years for disorderly conduct. He'll have five years of supervised probation when he gets out.
