PHOENIX -

Police say a woman may have stabbed and killed her husband in defense of her son on Thursday night.

A 49-year-old woman called 911 and told police she had stabbed her 43-year-old husband at their home near 19th Avenue and Osborn Road.

According to police, the woman's 28-year-old son from a previous relationship has a diminished mental capacity and was visiting her.

During the visit, the woman told police her son and her husband got into a verbal argument that eventually turned physical. The woman allegedly stabbed her husband while the men were fighting.

The woman has been released while officers investigate whether the woman legally acted in defense of her son.
