Search and rescue K-9's take certification test

Posted: Updated:
GLENDALE, Ariz. -

Six special canines are taking an important test for their careers on Friday.

Southwest Urban Search and Rescue K-9's and Glendale Fire Department disaster-trained dogs are taking a certification test to earn their official titles and jobs.

The K-9 teams will participate in exercises like finding victims buried in a 10,000 square-foot collapsed building, climb ladders, crawl under props and proceed through a tunnel by command.

The dogs play a critical role when rescuers work on structural collapse accidents. They help crews find victims buried deep in rubble by using their sense of smell.

In order to pass the test, the K-9's must meet standards required by FEMA.

FOX 10's Alexis Vance reports.
