LINDENWOLD, N.J. -

Only FOX 29 was there as the suspect in a series of violent crimes stretching across four towns was lead into Lindenwold Police headquarters Wednesday.

The suspect, 43-year-old George Meyers, is now the focus of investigators trying to solve a series of armed carjackings and attempted carjackings that's had Camden County residents on edge for days.

Police say Meyers was charged Wednesday morning with four counts of carjacking and two counts of kidnapping. Meyers is also being looked at in connection with four carjackings over the past few weeks, police said.

"Horrible, its really, really horrible,"said Lindenwold resident Iris DeVaughn. "In this area you wouldn't think. My mom and I walk up and down here everyday."

"I can't believe anybody would even try it around here," said neighbor Nathan Nicholson.

The suspect said nothing as detectives from four towns came here to question him after he was taken into custody following a mid-morning crime spree.

It all started with the attempted carjacking of a woman on 10th Avenue behind a Wawa. The victim fought him off and followed him to a gas station on Blackwood-Clementon Road where he attempted to carjack another woman and was arrested.

"That's ridiculous," Nicholson said. "Why do you need to do that. Go get a job and get your money yourself. You don't need to do that to people."

Police say Meyers was caught on surveillance tape in Camden recently after he forced two different elderly carjacking victims to drive him to the city using a box cutter as a weapon.

Once there, he robbed them and bought heroin at least once. He then dumped his victims and fled.

News of an arrest had local residents breathing a sigh of relief.

"I hope he gets charged for his crimes," said one neighbor. "That's not right what he did."

"Definitely relieved, my mom is 82-years-old and just the thought," said DeVaughn.

Police praised the bravery of one of today's carjacking victims for assisting in the apprehension of the suspect.

The carjackings date back to November 14th.
