Detroit science center getting ready to reopen

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit Science Center is getting ready for a revival.

WWJ-AM reports the facility now being called the Michigan Science Center will be open Saturday during the city's annual Noel Night activities. Spokesman Fred Huebener says the event will be a great opportunity to visit the attraction, which was popular with families and school groups.

Crains Detroit Business reports a Tuesday announcement is planned of an official reopening date.

As part of the effort, former Michigan Republican Party chairman Ron Weiser earlier this year reached an agreement to purchase the land, building and contents of the Detroit Science Center from a bank.

The Detroit Science Center closed in September 2011 after its board decided an ongoing deficit had created a financial crisis that couldn't be fixed without halting operations.
