MYFOXNY.COM -

A New Jersey man is accused of having hanged and suffocated his dog because it growled at him while he tried to sleep.

Philip Hollenbeak, 57, of Highlands faces charges stemming from the death of his Chesapeake Bay retriever.

Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Chief Victor "Buddy" Amato confirmed to MyFoxNY.com that  Hollenbeak put a choking collar on the three-year-old, 130-pound dog.  He then allegedly attached a lease and swung the leash over a closet door and then went to bed.

Amato says Hollenbeak then called police on Tuesday morning to remove the dead animal from his home.

Hollenbeak was arrested with a $1,500 cash bail option.
