Eagles Release Defensive End Jason Babin

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A day after losing at home to the Carolina Panthers, the Philadelphia Eagles announced that defensive end Jason Babin was released.

The announcement comes on the same day the team announced wide receiver DeSean Jackson, who suffered fractured ribs during Monday night's game, was placed on Injured Reserve, a move that ends his 2012 season.

Babin, who was just in his second season with the Eagles, has long been considered one of the league's best pass rushers.

According to NFL.com, Eagles coach Andy Reid said in a statement that the move gives the team the opportunity to give more playing time to some of the younger members.

"We appreciate everything that Jason has given this team over the last couple of years," Reid said in the statement.

FOX 29's Howard Eskin offered this assessment of the move, tweeting about Babin's release, "He has been terrible and now the eagles are showing the players if you play poorly u are done. More 2 come."
