Report: Young HIV Patients Not Aware They Are Infected

A report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found more than half of young HIV infected Americans are not aware they are infected.
Researchers analyzed data on HIV infections and the testing and risk behaviors among 13-24-year-olds and found this age group represents more than a quarter of new HIV infections each year.
According to the report, 60 percent of those infected don't know they carry the HIV virus.
CDC experts say a number of factors contribute to the high levels of infection and can vary by population, despite recommendations for routine HIV testing.
The analysis shows only 35 percent of 18-24-year-olds have been tested for HIV while only 13 percent of high school students have ever been tested.
The findings are published in the CDCs vital signs report in advance of World Aids Day on December 1.
