Seven inmates at a maximum-security prison in Florence have been treated with an anti-toxin to treat their suspected botulism poisoning over the weekend from drinking alcohol that was made clandestinely by prisoners.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provided the anti-toxin and will be performing tests to verify that the suspicion that inmates from the Arizona State Prison Complex Eyman were suffering from botulism poisoning.
Pinal County spokeswoman Heather Murphy says the seven inmates remain in intensive care and have been intubated.
Murphy says an eighth inmate is also being evaluated but has not been treated with the anti-toxin.
Authorities suspect the suspected botulism came from the material used to make the alcohol or was a result of unsanitary conditions in which the alcohol was produced.
This isn't the first time botulism poisoning has been reported at the Eyman complex. Back in August, four inmates were hospitalized for treatment for consuming suspected contraband prisoner-made alcohol.
