PHOENIX -

The final canvass of votes in Maricopa County is complete. The board of supervisors certified the results of the general election Monday.

County Recorder Helen Purcell says nearly 1.4 million ballots were cast in Maricopa County, a 76 percent voter turnout.

A huge number of early and provisional ballots were filled out, and it took time to verify them.

But Purcell says the count was done in less time than in 2008, with even more ballots this year. A lot of early ballots were turned into the polls on Election Day.

"We need to educate the people who are on the permanent early voting list to make sure that they understand what that means. If they don't want to be on that, if they still would like to vote at their polling place, then they need to understand that they're going to get a ballot and that means that if they go to their polling place they have to vote provisional, so maybe that's something they want to rethink," says Purcell.

County recorders across Arizona will be meeting with the Secretary of State to talk about any issues they may have encountered and discuss changes that could be made.

Ken Bennett will canvass all election results next Monday.
