Georgia Lottery machine problems frustrate Powerball players

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Another huge Powerball jackpot has everyone talking, but that lottery fever has turned to a lottery outage in some parts of Georgia.  Two straight days of computer problems have slowed down and in some cases stopped stores from selling tickets.

A 15th straight rollover has led to the record Powerball jackpot of $425 million to a single winner, and that means the outage has come at the worst possible time.

While there may be countless theories on how to win the big jackpot, one thing is certain: You can't win if you can't buy a ticket.  Georgia Lottery officials won't say how many machines have been down for the last two days, but they concede that the statewide issue began on Sunday morning, when a software update was done on the computers you see in stores.

Problems logging onto the lottery network created a bottleneck, slowing the computers down and in some cases, preventing them from working at all.

The outage has prompted outrage on the Georgia Lottery's Facebook page, coupled with frustration for many customers in many stores across the state.

A Georgia Lottery spokesperson told FOX 5 no one was available for an interview on Monday.  She also said the high interest in the $425 million Powerball jackpot led to triple the sales of a normal Monday, which also contributed to the computer slowdown.
