Firefighters in Roswell say they have donated a fire truck to a town in New York that was left devastated by Superstorm Sandy.
The volunteer fire department in Island Park, N.Y. lost an array of equipment, including two vehicles and an ambulance to the storm. Its fire headquarters was flooded with six feet of water.
The Roswell City Council previously approved the transfer of the surplus truck. Typically, an unneeded vehicle would be auctioned. But instead, it will be donated to the volunteer fire department.
"This is a town of about 5,000 people that had one fire station and the hurricane completely wiped them out. So the people are still there. The volunteers are still there. But they don't have any way of getting to the people in need. So we are thankful for the donation of this fire truck. It should allow them to be back in business and being able to help the people that they serve in Island Park," said Roswell Fire Chief Ricky Spencer.
The donated fire truck departed the Roswell Fire Department for New York at around 11:00 a.m. It is also carrying extra firefighters' gear and donated winter clothing.
