Child runs into street, hit by pickup

PHOENIX -

A 6-year-old boy was taken to the hospital in critical condition Thursday morning after being struck by a vehicle.

It happened Thursday morning in the area of 52nd St and Thomas in Phoenix.

Police say the boy ran into traffic for no apparent reason and was hit.

"He just turned and darted out into traffic, and was struck by a vehicle traveling southbound, a black Nissan pickup truck," said Phoenix Police Lt. David Laslavic.

The driver stopped at the scene.

"There's no evidence of impairment, this is just an unfortunate accident that occurred at this location."

The boy's mother was not far and went with him to the hospital. The child may live in the area.

"A very tragic situation to occur on Thanksgiving," added Lt. Laslavic.

The intersection was closed for several hours during the investigation.
