The Turkey Basics: Handling Leftovers Safely

Posted: Updated:

According to foodsafety.gov, the bacteria in food left out for more than two hours can double in number every 20 minutes.

Some of that bacteria can become a poison or toxin that could make you ill.

Foodsafety.gov has several safe turkey leftover handling tips on its website.

Officials recommend everything from when you should throw food away to how long it can be stored - both in your fridge and your freezer.

The website also offers a hotline to help you with any related questions at 1-800-674-6854. You can also get help online at either foodsafety.gov or AskKaren.gov.
