St. Paul man admits to sexual abuse at Shattuck St. Mary’s

FARIBAULT, Minn. (KMSP) -

A St. Paul man arrested Tuesday by Faribault police and Minnesota BCA agents admitted to having a sexual relationship with a Shattuck St. Mary's student while serving as a dorm parent in the summer of 1980.

Joseph Carl Machlitt, 63, is charged with one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of attempted criminal sexual conduct in the fourth degree.

Machlitt appeared in court Wednesday, with bail set at $100,000 without conditions and $50,000 with conditions. He posted bail with conditions late in the afternoon.

Under the terms of his bail agreement, he may not contact the victim or anyone under 18 without supervision.

The charges come after a 46-year-old man came to police after seeing news reports and Facebook posts on the sexual abuse charges against former Shattuck teacher Lynn Seibel.

The victim told investigators that Machlitt brought him to the hospital with concussion symptoms suffered in a swimming–related accident during the summer term of 1980. After being treated at the hospital, he was brought back to Machlitt's dormitory apartment and was allegedly sexually abused while under Machlitt's care.

The victim told police he was sleeping on the couch when he woke up to Machlitt massaging his leg. He claims Machlitt then performed oral sex on him and also touched him inappropriately at least two other times.

Detectives have identified at least one other student victim of Machlitt.

"Police believe that at the time of the incidents, Shattuck St. Mary's administrators and staff were not aware of the sexual abuse," said former interim Faribault Police Chief Don Gudmundson.

When interviewed by police, Machlitt admitted to having a sexual relationship with the victim, who was 14 at the time. He said he thought they had two sexual encounters.

Machlitt said he took a job at a school in New Hampshire just a few weeks after the alleged abuse. He worked at that school for four years and lived in New Hampshire for five years.

Machlitt, who taught art and photography at Shattuck St. Mary's, is the third staff member accused of sexual misconduct with a student in the past six weeks. The school has been largely vacant due to the Thanksgiving holiday, but officials released a statement on Wednesday saying it did not know about the allegations before the charges were filed.

Anyone with additional information about the cases against Joseph Machlitt or Lynn Seibel is asked to call Faribault police at 507-334-4305.
