MESA, Ariz. -

Police have arrested a man who they say attacked his girlfriend and threatened to kill her.

Court documents allege that the suspect, 25-year-old Juaquin Hernandez, hit his girlfriend in the face and threatened to kill her and her 13-year-old son with a knife.

Hernandez allegedly began to choke the victim, and her son scratched him in the neck with a jewelry tree to defend his mother.

Hernandez eventually left the scene but called for a ride using the victim's cell phone before leaving.

The victim called police and reported what happened and identified the friend that Hernandez called. Officers made a traffic stop on the car registered to Hernandez's friend and saw that the male passenger matched the description of the suspect.

The passenger, later confirmed to be Hernandez, gave police an alias. He was uncooperative with police and was taken into custody, based on evidence found in his pocket and scratches on his neck.

Officers determined Hernandez had warrants out of Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, and Maricopa County. He was booked into jail on charges of threatening, false reporting to law enforcement, and probation violation.
