Helping homeless veterans in Newark

Market Street outside Newark Penn Station is called Heroes Highway. Many veterans call these cold, hard streets their home.

Jack Fanous and his brother founded the G.I. Go Fund, an organization that helps homeless veterans. Fanous co-founded the group after the death of his friend Army Lt. Seth Dvorin.

Fanous and volunteers often make midnight visits to Market Street to talk to veterans, many suffering from substance abuse and mental health issues.

With the weather getting colder and Thanksgiving a few days away, Fanous said they need warm clothing, food and shelter.

Nationally, that number is about 70,000, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs, about 15 percent of the nation's homeless population.

The G.I. Go Fund plans a clothing and coat drive in nearby Irvington, New Jersey: a warm coat, hot meal, and a warm place to stay for a night, off the cold, hard streets of Newark.
