PHILADELPHIA -

Television, film and stage actor James Earl Jones was honored Monday night with the Marian Anderson Award at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in a celebration that included music from the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra.

Organizers say the Marian Anderson Award recognizes artists whose leadership on behalf of a humanitarian cause or issue benefits society.

Past winners include Mia Farrow, Bill Cosby and Maya Angelou.

The award was created in 1998 and named for the Philadelphian and American singer Marian Anderson. The award has since provided more than $500,000 in free public programs, residencies, commissions and grants to young artists, organizers said.

You can read more about the award on the Marian Anderson Award website.
