A drone being used by animal rights protesters at a Pennsylvania pigeon shoot was damaged when it was hit by gunfire and crash landed.

An advocate with the group Showing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK) was flying the drone Sunday over the Wing Pointe Gun Club in Berks County, about 50 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

The drone, dubbed Angel, was hit by gunfire at about 3 p.m. and went out of control before the smoking craft made a hard landing.

"Shooting a drone is an extremely dangerous act," said SHARK President Steve Hindi who piloted the drone. "What we were doing was completely legal."

Damage to the remote controlled helicopter, known as an octocopter because of its eight blade arms, was estimated at around $4,000.

Animal rights advocates say live bird shoots amount to animal cruelty although they are legal in Pennsylvania.

The state police said they were investigating the incident.
