Local teachers in Israel as violence escalates

Posted: Updated:
ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WJBK) -

International efforts to broker a cease-fire between Israel and Palestinian militants appear likely to intensify after violent fighting escalated Sunday. Amid air strikes and military action, some local teachers are in the region teaching English to Israeli students.

Fox 2's Alexis Wiley talked to them via the Internet. Click on the video player to watch her report.

Alex Green, 22, of Royal Oak and Rachel Applebaum, 23, of Birmingham are among a group of teachers in Israel. Wednesday, they say they were evacuated when sirens went off. They called the evacuation "sudden" and "stressful." They're now in a safe location in Netayna north of Tel Aviv. They say they could come back to the US at any time, but they're planning to stay in Israel until next June.
