Tucson's police chief says an officer is recovering following surgery for a bullet wound to the head and a search is on for the suspect.

Sgt. Robert Carpenter was shot in the head while responding to an attempted break-in, Chief Roberto Villaseñor said.

After Carpenter had surgery, he was awake, talking and aware of where he was. His family and fellow officers are with him at the hospital.

Tucson Police S.W.A.T. Team is working with officers to search for a suspect near Broadway Boulevard and Alvernon Way.

Police are looking for a person of interest described as a Hispanic man, 20 to 30-years-old, 5' 8" tall, 160 pounds, with a shaved head. He may have been wearing a dark blue jersey with the number 43 on it and blue jeans.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
