Food bank sees turkey shortage

Even before Superstorm Sandy struck, Island Harvest was serving more families than ever before. But now with thousands and thousands who lost everything in the storm, the group is bracing to help more families than ever before this holiday season.

With everything that has happened on Long Island in recent weeks, it would be easy to forget Thanksgiving all together, but not if these good Samaritans have anything to do with it

Robert Suarez, a Bethpage Federal Credit Union employee, lost his house in the storm. Yet he was among the volunteers helping load holiday food donations at Island Harvest's Emergency Food and Relief Drive in Bethpage on Friday.

The food bank was already seeing record need on Long Island before sandy struck.

Individuals and companies like Goya pitched in to collect turkeys and all the trimmings.

Island Harvest collected 2,500 turkeys and 25,000 pounds of food Friday, but the group says it still needs more turkeys.

If you would like to donate you can drop off at any Bethpage Federal Credit Union between now and end of November.
