Skunk Removed From Voorhees Tests Positive For Rabies

VOORHEES, N.J. -
A skunk removed from Voorhees Township earlier this month has tested positive for rabies, county officials announced Thursday.
According to Camden County, homeowners discovered the skunk lying in their yard after their dog went over to sniff it.
The skunk then sprayed the dog. The county says as the skunk was dying, a man was exposed to its saliva.
County officials say the man was treated for his exposure to the skunk's saliva and the dog has also received treatment from its veterinarian.
"Although rabies is a serious illness, it can be prevented by early treatment," Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez, a liaison to the Camden County Health Department said in a statement.
"If you have been bitten or scratched by a wild animal, it is important that you seek immediate medical attention."
County health officials recommend you keep vaccinations up to date for all pets and that you keep them under your direct supervision. It's also recommended you contact your local animal control agency to remove any stray animals from your neighborhood.
