Suspect in 2001 hit-run arrested in Panama

Posted: Updated:

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) -- A man suspected in the 2001 hit-and-run death of an 80-year-old woman on Long Island has been arrested in Panama.

Sebastian Barba was arraigned Tuesday in Nassau County, N.Y., in the death of Jean Renison after being detained Friday.

The 34-year-old Barba was charged with second-degree murder and leaving the scene of an accident.

Prosecutors say Barba struck Renison when she was crossing a street in Westbury on Feb. 6, 2001.

Prosecutors say he drove over Renison while a witness screamed for him to stop.

They say Barba then fled to Ecuador. The United States does not have an extradition treaty with Ecuador but it does have a cooperation agreement with Panama.

Barba was arrested there while traveling.

His attorney, Jonathan Marks, did not immediately return an e-mail seeking comment.
