Tripp Halstead suffers setback in hospital

ATLANTA -

Doctors have placed a breathing tube back in a 2-year-old Winder boy who was injured by a falling tree branch.

It's now been two weeks since a falling tree branch hit Tripp Halstead. For several days, Tripp had been very slowly improving.

On Friday, Tripp's grandfather, Larry Hughes, told FOX 5's Chris Shaw that doctors were talking about rehab for the toddler.

Days later, doctors at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston Hospital are now talking about regrouping.

"I wasn't sure it could get much worse, but little did I know that it can. So everything was good last night, very peaceful when I noticed the nurse staring him down, I looked and couldn't see him breathing normally, so she jumped into action and within seconds we had 12 staff members at his side," Tripp's mother, Stacy Halstead, wrote on Facebook on Monday.

Tripp was unconscious. Doctors told his parents to try and wake him up.

"Here I am looking at my baby who is unresponsive and I am in his face, telling him to, ‘wake up. wake up baby…mommy and daddy are here,'" Stacy wrote. "On the outside, I was all calm and collected but on the inside I was dying, I kept praying to give me strength to keep standing up and after all he had been through, do not let this be the end."

Doctors determined Tripp had a reaction to one of his medicines. He also has a collapsed lung. Doctors put his breathing tube back in and went to work on treating his lung.

"…After it was all said and done and we knew Tripp would live another day," Stacy wrote. "So not only pray for Tripp to get through this, but for me and Bill and both our families to be able to handle anything that lies ahead."

The Halstead family believes that the overwhelming wave of support and prayers, have helped Tripp. The family's Facebook page has more than 63,000 likes. You can get updates from the family on Tripp Halstead on their Facebook page at facebook.com/TrippHalsteadUpdates.

A fundraiser is being held at Zaxby's in Winder on Tuesday. Ten percent of all sales will go towards Tripp's medical bills.
