A veteran Southfield police officer was shot and injured Sunday during a shootout inside the police department. The suspect, a 64-year-old Southfield man, died when police returned fire.
A Southfield Police officer was shot and injured Sunday afternoon, after a gunman opened fire inside police headquarters. Police returned fire, killing the 64-year-old suspect.

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -- Southfield police have released the name of a man who they say walked into police headquarters Sunday afternoon and opened fire.
Hawkins says an officer remains in stable condition with a single gunshot wound in the shoulder. He says the officer, whose name is not being released, is a 27-year veteran.
Police say Collins, a Southfield resident and military veteran, first tried to shoot an officer behind bulletproof glass before officers exchanged gunfire with him.
Investigators are trying to figure out why Collins carried out the attack. Hawkins says Collins has no prior criminal history and no known grievance with police. A preliminary investigation did reveal that Collins was in poor health.
