Tech Check: Ultraviolet light germ-killing devices

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Ultraviolet Light is being used to kill germs and there are several products on the market right now that make claims to do just that using UV. The idea has been a big hit with moms.

The Pocket Purifier by Purely Products advertises to kill 99.9 percent of all germs including staph. It used by shining the blue light over surfaces and can be used for everything from bathrooms to kids sports equipment.

Other producers searched for online also claim to kill germs with UV light including a toothbrush, a vacuum cleaner, a water bottle that purifies before you drink it, and an air purifier. And there's even a UV product that claims to kill germs on your iPhone.

It of course if difficult to tell if it actually does anything, but WGHP, our FOX sister station in North Carolina, ran lab tests on a similar product, the Clean Wave Sanitizing Wand. They swabbed down the newsroom surfaces and took the samples to a lab. They found that the staph and bacteria were gone.

You can find these and similar products on Amazon.com as well as other online retailers.
